Who was George I. Alden?
George I. Alden, 1843-1926, Alden Library’s namesake, was an industrialist and educator who made major contributions to the city of Worcester. He was one of the founders of the Norton Emery Wheel Company, now Saint-Gobain, and one of the first faculty members at Worcester Polytechnic Institute where he taught mechanical engineering for twenty-eight years. During his life he established the Alden Trust, a fund that continues to support educational organizations in the Worcester area and beyond. For more information visit the Alden Trust.
Harrington Learning Center
The Harrington Learning Center is dedicated to the memory of Francis A. and Jacquelyn H. Harrington in honor of a $1 million donation to Quinsigamond Community College by the Harrington Foundation in 2005.
The dedication plaque located at the second floor entrance to the building reads: “The Harrington Foundation feels it most fitting that a college doing so much for Worcester should name a building for two people who did so much for Worcester."
The Harrington Foundation has made other significant contributions to the city including donations to the Boys and Girls Club of Worcester, the Greater Worcester Community Foundation, the EcoTarium, the United Way, and many other educational, cultural, human services, and health related institutions. The Harrington Foundation also donated money to QCC for the Harrington Computing Center located in Room 379A in the Administration Building.
